Jared Eberwein is probably one of my favorite people to talk to. He's super chill, really modest, and lives life real simply. Here is an email conversation I had with him regarding a couple different topics....Enjoy.
Weather:
-Are you getting that crazy El Nino rain?
Yes! the rain has been non-stop for 5 days, some days worst then others. The weather is out of control. I can't remember if it rain like this non-stop last year, i can never remember how the weather was the previous year.
-You getting any mudslides near you?
None by me, maybe about 30 to 60 min away.
-Nothing flooded near you?
I don't think anything crazy, like in the other city an hour away. I guess Blue Bench is pretty flooded, haven't seen it at all, but I'm sure its under water.
-Since everything to ride is outdoor, what have you been doing?
Pretty much nothing haha, hanging around home and being lazy. I figure it would only rain for a few days, so I thought no big deal. Now im getting impaciant, and antsy.
-What was the last indoor park that opened and closed near you?
I don't know one that opened, and then closed. I remember Vans in Onterio closing down about 8 or more years ago, I used to ride that place on roller blades, now I wish I could ride it on a bike just thinking about what there was.
Work:
-Since UPS has retained you after the holidays and you're a full on UPS employee, have they upgraded you to those tiny brown shorts?
You like to hear that wouldn't you!!! and you'd love to see me in them too right? hahaha but nope, those are for drivers only, and maybe some other important people.
-This is your first job right?
That it is...
-You into it? I know you go in at like three in the morning, right? How does that effect your riding schedule?
I really like the job, extremely intimidating at first, but you get the hang of it. I do go that early, and I really like it, because it doesn't effect my riding schedual. I usually get off around 9 or 10 so I have the rest of the day.
-You think they are going to retain you for awhile? Are you busting your ass?
I never know for sure it seems, but I was told there keeping me. I really hope I stay, and get locked into the job. I heard from someone today that the supervisor says good things about me. =] I tried hard to look good, so I am working my ass off.
On Larry Alvarado and Mike Saavedra:
-I've noticed that both Larry and Mike tend to take the father role around you....which one is more like your dad?
I feel like when I first got into riding Mike played more of that role, and Larry was just like a friend that I wasn't too close with. Over the years of knowing them both and our relationships growing and growing up, I feel Larry took over that job from Mike, and Mike and I are really friends! We're just like family though =]
-Which one did you meet first? And where?
This could be a tough question, because Larry worked at the bike shop, and I could have ran into him before but I didn't know him. I technically met Mike first, and I think it was at his trails that he had for 9 years. I was 14 and my friend Lil Mikey brought me there, and I feel and broke my collar bone, and later on Mike yelled at Lil Mikey saying, "Why you bringing little kids here that can't ride, and get hurt."
-Did that piss you off, Mike being an emotional bully?
hahahaha I never really gave it much thought, that's funny.
-What was the wildest thing you've seen Mike do off a bike?
Well with Mike, there is probably a number of things I've seen him do that I would think is scary, but I think that's just me. We were at Woodward, and ran out of socks, and we went to a store and we both stole socks. I was super scared and nervous, and Mike is just so calm and relaxed, I don't know how he does it, it's like a talent. You might think that's not crazy but there has been other illegal situations like this or worse, and Mike can make it seem like there is nothing going on, so I think thats wild.
-What was the wildest thing you've seen Larry do off a bike?
I've seen Larry get in fights, so right there, thats automatically wild! haha. Larry's not scared though, of anything it seems. I see him talk back to police officers and give them lip all the time, and just any random person. He doesn't just do it to be a dick, only if the other person does something or says anything un-called for to make Larry feel like shit, bad, low or just anything negative.
On Travelling:
-Mega tour was your first trip to the east coast, what was the big difference for you--living in a desert back home doesn't count.
Im not too sure, I think it was more green as in grass and what not, but we went in the summer so I didn't notice too much of a difference in the weather. There was somethinig about Milwaukee that I just really like, I don't know why. I really don't want to live in the snow, so the winters would be no bueno.
-Have you been all over Cali? You've done shows throughout the whole state right?
I haven't really explored Cali that much, the farthest north I've been is San Jose, other then that, I've only been within about an hour and a half to two from where I live.
-You just got a car recently--has that made you want to leave Riverside more often or is everything you need right there in town?
Not really, because I enjoy everything that surrounds me as it is, but I do like being able to just go anywhere as I please.
